Abstract
This study investigated the effects of cohabitation on the academic performance of post-secondary school students in Kaltungo, Gombe State, Nigeria. Cohabitation among students has become increasingly common in many Nigerian tertiary and post-secondary institutions, raising concerns about its potential impact on students’ academic outcomes, moral conduct, and overall well-being. The study was guided by the attachment theory as its theoretical framework. A descriptive research design was adopted, and data were collected using a researcher-developed instrument titled “Investigation on the Effects of Cohabitation and Students’ Academic Performance among Post-Secondary School Students in Kaltungo.” The instrument was administered to students across selected institutions within the study area. Data obtained were analyzed using frequency distribution tables to determine patterns and trends related to cohabitation and academic performance.
Findings from the study revealed that the level of cohabitation among post-secondary school students in Kaltungo is significantly high. The results further indicated that several factors contribute to this trend, including the search for social influence, economic support, companionship, and perceived protection from partners. However, the study established that cohabitation often exposes students to several risks such as premarital sexual activities, unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases, and emotional stress resulting from unstable relationships. These challenges may negatively affect students’ concentration, academic commitment, and overall academic performance.
The study concludes that although some students perceive cohabitation as a coping mechanism for financial or social pressures, its consequences may pose serious threats to their educational goals and personal development. The research therefore recommends increased parental supervision, improved hostel accommodation by institutions, effective counseling services, and stronger collaboration between parents and school authorities to address the growing challenge of student cohabitation in post-secondary institutions.
